Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola
Spoiler Free Review by Krystal
"One accident - a freaking car crash.
That’s all it took to send my brother’s and my life into a tailspin with no end in sight. I was going to be something. I was going to be the best. I had the Olympics in my sights. And it all went to shit in one flash. Brayden wasn’t ready to raise a younger sister when I was thrown into his lap. He had his life and everything going for him. Thankfully, he was still drafted to his dream hockey team. The same one dad played for when we were growing up.
It took time, but I started to get better, started to open up, started skating and even dating again. I even thought I found the perfect guy for me.
Isn’t it funny how guys hit on you when they know you’re not available, but when you’re single they won’t give you the freaking time of day? I guess the game is more fun that way. And for the captain of my brother’s team, that’s exactly what I was. A hat trick is three goals in hockey. Some say three is a crowd and they might be right.
I was Gavin Hayes' unobtainable goal.
*A No Cheating Standalone*"
Lets be honest... that synopsis... reeled you in, that is why you're here now. I participated in the Book Blitz and absolutely HAD to read this book.
First, the story of the book, is very believable. A car accident that changed someones life, because this happens all the time. Myla to be exact, her goal was to be an Olympic Skater, but when she woke up in the hospital, with vivid memories of the horrific crash that almost took her life, all those goals went down the drain. Myla moves in with pro hockey player brother, Brayden. He encourages Myla to get back on the ice, where she starts as an Assistant Coach, Simon. Simon and Myla became best friends, he plays match maker, and lets just say it does not end so well...when Brayden and his team mate, Gavin Hayes comes to the rescue. Without giving the story away, Gavin and Myla hit it off and the story FLIES from there.
Second, the characters are not well developed. I was expecting Myla to be broken, and to have some sort of trust issues or daddy issues... as she is Gavins "unobtainable goal." Gavin, we learn of his past, but thats about it, besides he's the coaches son and his random hookups.. we don't really know much about him. Brayden, has he always drank a lot? There isn't much there besides the fact that he loves his sister.
Third, the story flew way to fast. From a quick kiss to run off crazy puck groupies, to secretly dating, it was just too fast for my liking. I have no clue how this ties into the story? Myla wasn't unobtainable, and there was no chase.
In general, the story in general was great, as the story takes off very well. Unfortunately, it didn't meet the mark for me and I was very disappointed. I would have loved to get to know the characters more, as the story had multiple POV's. The story flew by way too fast and I would have loved to see a chase for the unobtainable goal.
I would definitely read more of Kristens work in the future.
