Synopsis

Cadence Lewis has been dancing since she could walk. Living in New York with her parents she has the chance to go to the best dance school in the country, but when her father does the unthinkable she’s forced to leave her dreams behind and move to a small southern town with her mom. Cadence is having a hard time adjusting to her new life when she meets Jade Carpenter. Jade starts to show Cadence that small-town life isn’t so bad, but when Cadence has a chance to go back to New York she is on the next flight and will do anything to get her old life back.



Excerpt

“We’ll see,” I say, trying to get Gran to drop the subject. Looking at the chicken, I try to decipher how to eat it. I begin to grab my knife and fork, but Mom clears her throat and I know that’s the wrong way so I glance at Mom as she wiggles her fingers. Seriously? Placing my napkin in my lap for extra protection, I take a deep breath and delicately take a bite. The grease runs down my cheek, and I have to bite harder to pull the meat away from the bone. Gran starts laughing.

                                      

“Cade, you might as well quit worrying about how you’re going to stay clean and dig in. If you’re having that big of a problem with fried chicken, I hate to see what happens with a rack of ribs.”

“I try to delicately take another bite, but soon realize it’s no use. Grease pops in my mouth and I am so done. I’ve never tasted such a unique flavor. And grease dripping down my cheek is just gross. Placing the chicken back on the plate, I decide to remove the crust so it won’t be as greasy. I carefully pull the crunchy part from the meat and when the top easily comes off, I feel a sense of accomplishment. Gran takes the crust from my plate and puts it in her mouth."

                                             

“That’s the best part Cadence,” Gran exclaims.

“Doubtful.” I take the fork and knife and somehow cut the meat from the bone. Gran stares at me and that pisses me off more while Mom eats quietly. I take small bites and chew them thoroughly in hopes that I’ll be full in a few minutes and save myself some calories. As for the tea, I only drink when necessary.”


Review

Tutus and Cowboy Boots was my first book by Casey Peeler. I feel in love instantly with her sweet characters and their southern ways. Cadence Lewis is the stubborn socialite who was pulled from the only life she ever knew. She danced, shopped and loved hanging out with her friends in New York City until a major family change causes her mother to move them back to her family home. This move is more than just leaving behind everything that she knows this is a major culture shock as well. Cadence's grandmother (Gram) requires everyone to carry their weight around the house and farm. She is responsible for doing things she never thought possible.

Gram doesn't have a lot of hired help nor does she want it. However, she does employ Barrick. Barrick is the sexy and polite cowboy who just can't take Cadence seriously. He has never experienced anything quite like her. He finds himself laughing and smiling every time she messes something up and this just gets under her skin. Casey is brilliant in how she writes the banter between the two of them. I looked forward to seeing what was going to happen next and fell more in love with Barrick with every passing page. By the way...I call dibs! Barrick is so mine ladies.

This is a story you have to read. It's sweet and will have you wanting to know what happens!

Casey Peeler grew up in North Carolina and still lives there with her husband and daughter.

Growing up, Casey wasn't an avid reader or writer, but after reading Their Eyes Were Watching God  by Zora Neal Hurston during her senior year of high school, as well as multiple Nicholas Sparks' novels, she found a hidden love and appreciation for reading. That love ignited a passion for writing several years later. Casey's writing style combines real-life scenarios with morals and values teenagers need in their daily lives.

The nice thing about Undone is that you do not need to read both books in order to understand what is happening with the characters.
